Chapter 11

“Well, that was some meeting!” Mai burst into the shop, excitement all over her face. “Feels like we’re really getting somewhere now. Except that Councillor, Costello – she was a wet blanket, wasn’t she? Do you know, afterwards when we were all talking about the situation, she actually told Mrs. Kapoor she’d be better off online? She means well, I suppose but it’s hardly fighting spirit, eh?”

Teresa agreed. “Yes, she’s not exactly hopeful. Still, she told us herself, she’s seen this happen over and over. I suppose it’s hard to be optimistic when you see these developers get away with it time and again.”

“Setanta says it’s not all developers, but that the good ones are crowded out by the unscrupulous ones. And Peadair said that friend of his, the one who gave him all the inside scoop on Brook and Pollard – he’s all right.”

“Ah pet, there are always good people. And we need development, we need progress. That fine building we’re trying to save was new once, and not that long ago. People didn’t like the old tenements being pulled down to build that, either. But that gave housing, and businesses to the street. This new development will make lots of people homeless and put half a dozen people out of work. What good is that?”

“Don’t have to convince me, Mrs. O’Brien. It’s bad for the city, bad for the environment and bad for people like the Kapoors. And the others, of course.”

Teresa bit her lip. The temptation to laugh at Mai’s obvious partiality for a certain Kapoor was almost overpowering. Ah, to be sixteen and in the throes of a first crush again…on second thoughts, no. Her first crush had been on a very unsuitable young man who wore his hair slicked back and affected the most ridiculous outfits. It wouldn’t have worked at all.

“Mrs. O’Brien, do you think we can figure out who killed Pollard? Only, we seem to be gathering a lot of information but to be honest, I haven’t a clue what to do with it all.”

“That’s the first step, Mai. Information is vital. We need to understand the situation, know all the moving parts, see where it all fits together. Otherwise, we’re just guessing. The more we know, the more we can rule someone in – or out. Take Dan, for example. If we didn’t know him, and Denise too, we could easily believe he was capable of murder. But we know he’s really gentle underneath, we know Denise would never defend a murderer, we know she knows him best – oh!”

“What is it?” Mai eyed her expectantly.

“Nothing. Something. I need to think about it.” She whipped out her phone, opened Samsung Notes – thanks to her granddaughter, and her many lessons in modern technology – and quickly typed in a few words. “There, that’ll remind me.”

“You’re amazing, Mrs. O’Brien. And a bit scary.”

“Scary?”

“Yeah, all my mates think so. It’s not normal, someone your age being able to use Facebook and Insta and all those things.
